Sauron EU project to tackle cyber security

Valenciaport Foundation is developing the Sauron project which proposes a "holistic situation awareness concept" for protecting EU ports and their surroundings.

The solution combines advanced physical security features with the newest techniques in prevention for the detection and mitigation of cyber-threats, including the use of new visualisation techniques using immersive interfaces, cyber 3D models and so on.

In addition, a Hybrid Situation Awareness (HSA) application capable of determining the potential consequences of any threat, will inform security and rescue teams to any potential event/situation that could put a port at risk.

Terror and cyber-attacks are becoming increasingly more coordinated and more complex.

The recent ransomware attack, WannaCry or WanaCrypt0r 2.0, affected more than 150 countries and shut down activity in some commercial ports, with resulting economic losses. And the shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk suffered global IT breakdown at its terminal operations caused by the Petya cyber-attack.

Reducing the vulnerabilities of EU ports, as one of the main European critical infrastructures and increasing systemic resilience in the face of a physical, cyber or combined threat, is a major objective of the project.

Sauron is funded under the EC initiative H2020 Prevention, detection, response and mitigation of the combination of physical and cyber threats to the critical infrastructure of Europe.
